Purpose of Life
The greatest journey we will ever undertake is the journey within ourselves.
Throughout life, we ask profound questions:
- Who am I?
- What is the purpose of my life?
- How can I find lasting happiness?
Though these questions may seem different, they all lead to the same universal truth.
Join me on a journey of self-discovery as we explore these timeless questions, uncover life's deeper purpose, and demystify the truths that have inspired seekers for generations.
What is happiness?
Before we talk about the purpose of life, we need to get one thing straight: What is happiness?
Most people believe they know what happiness is.
We often associate it with success, financial security, meaningful relationships, achievements, or finally reaching the goals we've worked so hard to accomplish.
And to be fair, these things do bring happiness. But often, that happiness is fleeting.
The excitement of a promotion fades. The thrill of buying something new wears off. Relationships slowly loses its spark. Even achieving a lifelong dream eventually becomes our new normal.
Before long, another goal appears. Another desire. Another expectation. And without realizing it, we find ourselves running on the same endless treadmill, chasing the next thing that promises fulfillment.
Real happiness isn't constant excitement. It isn't found in achievements or external validation.
True happiness is an inner state of contentment: a quiet, enduring sense of fulfillment that remains even as life's circumstances change. It doesn't mean life is always easy or perfect. It means your peace is no longer entirely dependent on what happens around you.
This brings us to a profound concept that beautifully explains why so many people feel empty despite having a life that appears successful on paper: Ikigai.
Ikigai: Discovering Your Reason for Being
The Japanese concept of Ikigai (pronounced ee-kee-guy) translates to "reason for being" — the reason you get up each morning with a sense of purpose.
At its core, Ikigai lies at the intersection of four essential questions:
- What do you love?
- What are you good at?
- What does the world need?
- What can you be rewarded for?
When these four elements begin to overlap, life feels different.
You no longer feel as though you're simply moving from one achievement to the next. Instead, your actions, values, passions, and purpose begin to align. And in that alignment, life takes on a deeper sense of fulfillment.
This is where many people misunderstand happiness. We often believe happiness is something to pursue, as though it's waiting at the finish line of our next goal.
The Six Pillars of a Meaningful Life
Now that we understand what happiness is better, let's get into how to build a meaningful life.
While each person's journey is unique, a fulfilling life is often built upon six essential pillars. These are the areas that shape not only what we do, but who we become.
Relationships
The people who love you, support you, challenge you, and remind you who you are. Meaningful connections provide a sense of belonging and enrich every stage of life.
Creative Expression
The space where curiosity, imagination, and passion come alive. Whether through art, writing, music, travel, problem-solving, or anything that interests you and is meaningful to you such as building something new like this blog, creativity allows you to express your authentic self beyond the routines and responsibilities of daily life.
Career & Growth
Where your talents meet opportunity. It's not just about earning a living, but about continually learning, contributing, and growing into the person you're capable of becoming.
Community & Service
A life centered only on ourselves eventually feels small. Contributing to something larger — whether through kindness, volunteering, mentoring, or simply being present for others — creates a deeper sense of purpose and connection.
Spiritual Outlook
A spiritual outlook is the quiet understanding that life's meaning is not found in what we possess, but in how deeply we connect, grow, and serve beyond ourselves.
Healthy Body & Mind
A healthy body and a calm, clear mind are the foundation of meaningful purpose, because only in balance can your energy, focus, and heart align with your Ikigai.
Ikigai (Personal Alignment)
The thread that weaves everything together. When your passions, strengths, values, and contributions begin to align, life gains clarity and direction. You no longer feel pulled in different directions; instead, your choices begin to reflect who you truly are.
When one or more of these pillars is neglected, life can feel incomplete even when everything appears successful from the outside.
But when they are nurtured with intention, something remarkable happens.
Meaningful life gives you purpose and purpose gives us happiness. In my next blog, I will write how to align and strengthen each pillar…
