Yellowstone National Park
What makes it unique
This is America's first national park, and it feels like stepping into a documentary. There are geysers, waterfalls, huge canyons, and wild creatures throughout — bison, elk, and even wolves if you're lucky.
Must-sees
- Old Faithful — Erupts like clockwork, roughly every 90 minutes.
- Grand Prismatic Spring — The massive rainbow-colored hot spring is real, and far more colorful in person.
- Lamar Valley — Go early in the morning to see bison herds and possibly wolves or bears from a distance.
- Grand Canyon of Yellowstone — A beautiful canyon with waterfalls; Artist Point offers a "wow" view.
- Mammoth Hot Springs — Otherworldly terraces that constantly change due to geothermal activity.
White Sands National Park
What makes it unique
Picture unending waves of pure white dunes that look like snow — but it's really soft gypsum that stays cool even in the sun. It feels like another planet: quiet and surreal.
Must-sees
- Dunes Drive — An 8-mile scenic drive into the heart of the dunes, with great photo stops and trail access.
- Visitor Center — Historic building with exhibits, maps, restrooms, and sled rentals.
- Sand sledding — The most popular activity; best near mile markers 4–6. Use waxed plastic saucers.
- Sunset & stargazing — Stunning light over the dunes and great photography. Join ranger-led Sunset Strolls or Full Moon Hikes (seasonal).
